What makes a king a king?
Children's sermon
Object:
a paper crown or any kind of toy crown
Good morning! This is Christ The King Sunday. Let's talk
about what it means to be a king. Kings have crowns, don't they?
I brought a crown today. (Show the crown.) If I put this crown on
____________ (put the crown on one of the children), will that
make _______ a king? (Let them answer.) No, just wearing a crown
doesn't make you a king. Do we have a king in our country? (Let
them answer.) No, we live in a republic and we have no king, but
there are still some countries that do have kings. Does anyone
know the name of a country that still has a king? (Let them
answer. If nobody knows one, you can name Norway or another
country that still has a king.)
How does one get to be a king? Could one of you get to be a
king? (Let them answer.) No, kings are kings because they are
born to be kings. When the king of Norway dies, his son will be
the king. Kings are not elected like the president. They are born
to be king.
So is Jesus a king? Was he born to be a king? (Let them
answer.) Yes, of course he was. We will be celebrating his
birthday next month and he was born a king. And not just the king
of a country like the king of Norway, but the king of the whole
world!
So it is good that we celebrate this Sunday as the Sunday of
Jesus Christ, the king of the whole world. Of course, we know
that most of the people in the world do not consider him the
king, but that doesn't change the fact that he is the king. You
and I know that he is the king, don't we? (Let them answer.)
Let's say a prayer praising our king.
Dear Jesus: We praise you as the king of all creation. We are
happy to have you as our king, and we pray that you will help us
convince other people that you are truly the king. Amen.
