In 1846, a group of immigrants under the leadership of George Donner was forced to winter in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains of California. Unable to complete their journey to the fertile California valleys because of snowstorms which marooned them in the 7,000-foot mountain break now infamously called "Donner Pass," they experienced extreme suffering and many of them died, with some of the survivors ultimately resorting to cannibalism.
