In 1889, a ship left the Netherlands bound for America. On that ship was four-year-old Mary Vox, my grandmother. When she arrived at Ellis Island, she received, by mistake, three smallpox inoculations. Only one such inoculation was required. However, Mary spoke no English, and when the authorities asked her if she had her smallpox injection, she kept saying "No," meaning she didn't want another one. The language barrier caused the repeated hypodermic injections on a hysterical little girl.
