In 1900 the Daughters of the American Revolution elected Jane Adams, the noted social worker, to honorary membership. However, her antiwar stance during World War I and her insistence that even subversives had a right to trial by due process of law caused them to expel her. She commented that she had thought her election was for life, but now knew it was for good behavior. Unlike that of the DAR, God's election (his gracious, unconditional embrace of us, in spite of everything) is for both life and eternity -- and good behavior has nothing to do with it.
