In 1909 a young man graduated from high school. He then spent the next two years working at a creamery to help pay for his brother's expenses at law school. He then took the entrance exam for the Military Academy at West Point. He was accepted and graduated in 1915 and was commissioned a second lieutenant of infantry. Soon after the United States entered World War I, he was promoted to captain. For his work in organizing a tank corps he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.
