In 1926 and '27, Charles A. Lindbergh was an airmail pilot. He and Frank Samuels would hop out to San Diego to check on an airplane being built for a special project of Lindbergh's. The plane was named The Spirit of St. Louis, and the project was a risky one, the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. On these trips Lindbergh and Samuels stayed in the same hotel room. One night Samuels woke up in the middle of the night. The first thing he noticed was that the Lone Eagle was not in his bed. Then he saw him sitting by the window, looking out.
