In 1985 I stood at Bet Shearim, one of the principal centers of Jewish survival and revival after the disasters of A.D. 70 and A.D. 135. It's in the northwest corner of the Jezreel Valley, north of historic Megiddo. In the section of the ruins called the Tomb of the Patriarchs, the unfinished entrance to catacomb fourteen has an inscription to three Rabbis: Shimon, Gamaliel, and Hanina. As I stood there trying to imagine the teacher of Saul of Tarsus, famous for his Acts 5 suggestion to the Sanhedrin, who is buried there, I came to the decision.
