In 1986, Maryann was among a group from the United States who traveled to a little village in northern Nicaragua, the site of a four-year-old civil war. The night before their arrival two brothers had been killed by the Contras. They were 14 and 16 years old. The boys had been hauling a load of shoes from one mountain village to another for distribution. The Contras stopped the truck, probably hoping to find weapons or food or anything else they could use; they killed the boys with machetes and took the truckful of shoes.
