In a 1991 newspaper column George Will contrasted the lifestyles of two politicians --John Sununu and Bill Gray. Sununu's haughtiness was characterized as a "grotesque inflation of pretentiousness by presidential appendage." Gray's lack of pretense, on the other hand, impressed Will. Gray, the highest-ranking black member of the House of Representatives also was in line to be Speaker of the House. Nonetheless, he announced to his shocked colleagues that he was resigning his seat in the House in order to become head of the United Negro College Fund.
