A 1993 article in Christian Century reported these facts. In Argentina, children ages eight to ten are trained as prostitutes and then sold to the United States and various Arab countries. In Brazil, each year about 400,000 children younger than age five die of diseases that could be cured if medical treatment were available to them. Warfare in Peru has left 1,000 children dead, 3,000 wounded, and 50,000 orphaned. And conflict in Guatemala has left 210,000 children as orphans.
