According to John Gager, professor of religion at Princeton University and editor of Curse Tablets and Binding Spells from the Ancient World, people have been invoking elaborate curses on their enemies and opponents for over 2,000 years. As early as 400 B.C., people were trying to hurt or hinder their bosses, lovers who had jilted them, their business competitors, racing and wrestling opponents, government auditors, and almost anyone who was making their lives difficult.
