Charles Laymon comments, "... to the Jews, David's reign represented a kingdom under God in which his people found their place on the earth. They amounted to something." David wanted to build a house for the Lord. But God had other plans concerning the kind of house. He took David from following the sheep for a certain purpose in the history of his people. The kingdom of Israel played a major role in establishing the Kingdom of God through Christ.
