Adults have a hand time...
Illustration
Adults have a hand time accepting gifts. They receive gifts with the words, "You shouldn't have" or "What did you do this for?" There is something in adults that make them feel as if they must earn everything they get or they do not have the night to own anything. To illustrate the point, college students are given "D's" and they earn "A's." I have never heard a college student admit that an "A" was not an earned grade. The same principle holds true for people on the job; i.e., "They fined me" is the opposite of "I earned the raise." Raises are never gifts.
