After lunch we decided to go to the beach. When we got there, we were turned away because the parking lot was full. As we were driving off, we noticed a less crowded beach and decided to give it a try. It provided us with a great afternoon. We observed two children, a boy and a girl, playing in the sand. They were building a sand castle. Just when they had nearly finished their project, a big wave came along and knocked it down, reducing it to a heap of wet sand. I thought the children would be devastated. But instead, they ran up the shoreline, laughing and holding hands, and sat down in safer ground to build a new castle.
They taught me an important lesson. All the frustrations of our lives, all the filled beaches, all the ruined plans, are built on sand. Only our relationships to other people and to God endure. Sooner or later, a big wave will come and knock down what we have worked so hard to build up. When that happens, only the person who has somebody's hand to hold will be able to laugh and carry on.
