In his book, The Hand of God, Oswald McCall observes that as we grow older, the images and objects that have claimed our devotion become etched upon our faces. Men and women become like that which they love. The elder John confirms that observation. Christians who believe and live as if they are God's children know that they will eventually become like him and see him as he is.
The Christmas carol, "Once in Royal David's City," might well be used on this Sunday in Eastertide to illustrate this lesson, especially the last stanza:
