Albert Camus' great novel The Plague tells the story of the young doctor, Bernard Rieux, who tries faithfully to utilize all his medical skills to heal thousands of people of a deadly pestilence. Honest, caring and ubiquitous, he diligently comforts many. So great is his reputation in helping others, and so desperate are they for a cure, that simply being in his presence brings hope of relief from their afflictions. Falling within Meursault's shadow is virtually the prologue to an actual remedy.
