Alice Walker in The Color...
Illustration
Alice Walker in The Color Purple reveals a realistic picture of the pain, violence and suffering she knew in the black community in which she grew up. In one rather moving dialogue two ladies are discussing the merits of faith and the church. One suggests that a good reason for believing in God is the color purple. Who else, she argues, could have invented the color purple? That is profound. Who else but God can create and make those things that are our highest delights and joys? Yet, too often, the world fails to acknowledge this simple truth.
