Allan Bloom, a professor of philosophy at the University of Chicago, stirred a national debate about education in America with the publication of his book, The Closing of the American Mind. One of the general observations that Bloom makes is that on the secondary, or high school, level we have succeeded in teaching that all education is tentative. We have permitted the scientific method to permeate all of learning. With this method we learn to say that what we have discovered to be true for the moment may have to be revised by what we learn tomorrow. The approach has its place.
