The amazing thing about Richard Nixon was the inner conflict he suffered with his personal ethics. One of the most important virtues, he believed, was loyalty to the men and women who successfully made him president. These men had toiled endlessly in the trenches, doing whatever had to be done to ensure victory for a man who had risen through the political ranks. His loyalty, almost to the last man (but did not include the last man, John Dean), was well known among his colleagues.
