The ancient story of Mary...
Illustration
The ancient story of Mary and Martha speaks to our often frantically busy lives with the clear reminder that, in all our busyness, we may lose sight of that which is essential.
Back in the early years of steamer traffic on the Mississippi River, the steamboats used to race with one another. Once a Lee Line paddle-wheeler was carrying meat from New Orleans to Memphis. Another boat tried to pass ... and the race was on. The Lee Line captain ordered full speed ahead but, seeing himself losing the race, he ordered some of the fatty meat he was carrying to be thrown into the fire.
