The journey of the wise men is an expression of man's religious quest. There is an illuminating conversation between Charles and Barbara (Babs) in John Galsworthy's Worshipful Society.
Babs says carelessly, "Oh, life is short."
She means by that that we live a few years on this distracted planet and then die by accident or design. Death ends it all. Then we are through. There is no feeling, no memory, no knowledge, no hurt or haunted sense of being. Thus, "life is short."
