The cross of Christ was the merciful, free gift of salvation to humankind yet dead in sin. The cross of Christ closes our boasting mouths, preventing us from pointing to our puny works.
John Knox, writing of reverence in prayer life, said that standing in the presence of God one must be found "humble in God's presence, utterly disclaiming any righteousness of our own. Let us not think that we shall be heard for anything good in ourselves, for all such as boast about their own righteousness in the presence of God's mercy, are numbered with the proud Pharisee."
