Back in the 1940s Eugene Talmadge, the governor of Georgia, died while in office. He had long been a power in that state's politics. So synonymous was his name with the Georgia political structure that his son, Herman, assumed that the governorship belonged to the Talmadge family. Therefore, when his father died he moved into the governor's mansion. Eventually the courts intervened, and the lieutenant governor took his rightful place as the next governor of Georgia.
