Back in the fifties in Chicago, Lutheran social agencies from several Lutheran bodies met for a joint convention. It was a time when the agencies were expanding their efforts to be more professional and were employing more people trained in the behavioral sciences. The keynote speaker was Dr. Alvin Rogness, then president of Lutheran Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota. He indicated how much he appreciated the new emphasis on the behavioral sciences. He also made a confession of thanksgiving for the good rats that taught us so much about ourselves and about human behavior in general.
