Baltimore police put a homeless man named Martin Henn in jail on suspicion of setting a car on fire. But the jail botched its paperwork. As his beard grew, Henn repeatedly asked social workers when his court date was. Nothing happened. Finally a computer operator discovered that Henn had been in jail for more than a year without ever having been formally charged with a crime. By this time, Henn's hair had grown down to his shoulders. The horrified judge later admitted that this homeless man had simply been lost in the system.
