Blaise Pascal was an influential French mathematician and scientist of the seventeenth
century. Besides his scientific work, he is noted for "Pascal's Wager," a famous argument
for the reasonableness of Christian faith.
Pascal is less well known as a man of passionate religious experience. When he died in 1662, his servant found a small piece of parchment sewn into the lining of his coat. At the top of the paper Pascal had drawn a cross. Underneath the cross he had written these words:
