A brave commando captain in the British army during World War II was the pathfinder for his company. It was his job to parachute behind enemy lines that others might be guided to him. One day he did not return. Among his belongings was a letter addressed to his mother. The pastor who read the letter to the captain's mother, the Rev. John Birkbeck of Aberdeen, felt the words were meant to be shared.
"By the way I have made, others will follow; by the steps I have cut, others will climb; by the bridges I have thrown, others will cross. For no man lives unto himself -- and no man dies unto himself."
