Caesarea was located on the Mediterranean coast. King Herod had built it up into a beautiful, urban center that was the seat of Roman rule in the territory. A temple in Caesar's honor was built there with a huge statue of him adorning it. What a remarkable setting, especially within the house of one of Caesar's soldiers, for the gift of the Holy Spirit to be given. Although the artifacts of this fascinating location have been buried over time, the timeless truth of what Peter learned is still with us today: there are no boundaries which God's Word, when spoken, cannot cross -- whether political, social, national, geographic, or religious.
A recent archaeological discovery is an early Christian church that had been built over the ruins of Caesar's temple in Caesarea.
