Charles Darwin in the 1830s theorized the concept of natural selection and the succeeding concept of evolution. Herbert Spencer took this concept further and developed the theory of Social Darwinism, which justified the evolution of one class of people over another. Europeans, of course, were at the top of the evolutionary process with all other nationalities taking an appropriate place below. Spencer claimed he was not a racist, but his theory proved that the "survival of the fittest" would promote one race above another.
