Illustration
Charlie stood on the corner, pillowcase stuffed full of who-knows-what, in hand.
Charlie was just sixteen, black, and lived in a gang-infested teeming ghetto on Chicago's west side. He had been arrested eighteen times for charges ranging from auto theft to attempted murder. He had been in prison six times. His parents were dead. He stayed with an aunt.
