As Christ kneels and washes the feet of the disciples of the upper room, he is teaching them about service. Peter wanted to be self-righteous in his request for a total washing. Richard Foster, in his book titled Celebration of Discipline, writes the following about our motives for serving:

Self-righteous service comes through human effort. True service comes from a relationship with the divine Other deep inside.
