A Christian educator has stated that we are into the third generation of biblical illiteracy. The teacher of a high school age church class opened a Bible to one of the Gospels and handed it to one of the students. "Here, Brian, read this passage out loud for us," the leader instructed. Although he was unused to reading in public and rather unfamiliar with the scripture, Brian bravely began. The class laughter, however, at his pronunciation interrupted him before he got beyond the first verse: "And Jesus said to the PHAR-i-sees and Se-DUCE-ees...." However, sometimes it is our familiarity with the Bible that creates our greatest hindrance to understanding the scriptures. We may not really listen in order to hear the words afresh. We may just run through the text, failing to notice the surprises that await us. We may read familiar passages with a veil lying over our minds. -- Bristow
