At Christmastime, a Midwestern radio station ran a contest to increase its audience. They announced the contest in area newspapers and on two dozen billboards. Each hour, the disc jockey randomly picked a name out of the phonebook and called that person. He would say something like: "This is The Big Kahoona from WELF. I have called to give you $100. Do you believe me?" All the person on the other end of the phone had to say was: "I believe." In the five-week contest, the station made over 300 calls. Only six people believed that someone was going to give away $100.
