The church was stately, exquisitely appointed, and symbolically precise. Worshipers sat silently perusing worship bulletins handed them by smartly dressed ushers located at front entrances.

A noticeably untidy man, visiting the church for the first time, quietly entered the foyer. Immediately, he was met by one of the ushers who hastened to seat him in the back row near the door. The visitor was not apt to be seen there and, too, the air would, it was hoped, move the odor out the door.
