In the city of Milwaukee there is a group called MOSES. Denis Jacobson describes MOSES in his book Doing Justice. MOSES is an organization of many faith-based communities that see their mission as transforming the city toward godly ways. To do this, "the church is sent into the public arena with the ethical imperatives of Jesus." This is necessary for the church to do because "the world, as it is, is driven by abusive power, consuming greed, relentless violence, and narcissistic pride." To seek the welfare of the city, then, is to engage "the nightmare that the world has become" with God's dream for the world as it should be. Only in this way can everyone come out ahead.
