A congregation that had been very slow to change was just adding the passing of the peace. For a few weeks the congregation phased into the practice. The pastor would say, "Peace be with you." The congregation would respond, "And also with you." They would then sit down and the offering plates would be passed. On the last week of this practice the bulletin announced that next week the congre-gation would then turn to each other and greet one another with the peace and a handshake. A pastor and his family happened to be visiting the congregation while on vacation. Not knowing the practice of the congregation and assuming it to be like his home parish, after the pastor and congregation exchanged the peace orally he turned to the woman next to him. "Peace be with you," he said as he extended his hand. "That's not 'til next week!" said the woman angrily.
