Corrie ten Boom, in her book, The Hiding Place, tells the story of one day of interrogation while in prison for hiding Jews. The officer assumed that she had more information about the network of people who were aiding their Jewish neighbors to escape Holland, and had been relentless in his questioning. Corrie was not a gentle person by nature, and being exhausted finally answered in a sarcastic manner. At this, a guard raised his arm to back-hand her, and she instinctively cried out, "Lord Jesus, protect me!" The guard, taken aback by her outcry, hesitated and lowered his arm.
