The cross of Christ was decisive for Paul; he bore the marks of it in his own body. That cross ruled out human pride. Paul himself was reminded to glory not in his own strength, but in Christ's new creation. He was kept humble, as was the general in this story.
A certain king, after a great victory, appointed three honors for his successful general. He decreed that the victor should be greeted with loud cheers, he should enter the capital in a triumphal car drawn by four white horses, and the captives should follow the conqueror's chariot, bound hand and foot.
