Damage, a first novel by Josephine Hart, received remarkable acclaim as a powerful psychological study. The principal character in the story is a doctor who had been born to wealth and married into wealth. The doctor is a son-in-law of a member of the English parliament, and the doctor is elected to parliament. He is well regarded, both as a physician and political figure. His wife is beautiful. Together they can boast of a handsome son who develops a career in newspaper editing and a lovely daughter who paints. One could not imagine how a life could be arranged more suitably and comfortably.
