A dangerous, but politically popular, modern philosophy known as genetic determinism focuses its research on four human traits: violence, mental illness, alcoholism, and sexual orientation. There is evidence among subjects counseled by its proponents that genes may adversely affect happiness, shyness, religiosity, and tendency to divorce. The philosophy implies that a person has little power to make choices in those areas of life, and in fact, is not accountable. It has been used to color political debate on gay rights, health care, juvenile justice, and welfare reform. The power of sin in our lives is so strong that it seems we have no choice but to succumb to it. This fact may lead some to think that there is no hope in trying to do what is right, nor should we be held accountable. But Saint Paul reveals that through Christ that awful stranglehold on us has been broken, and we are now free from the power of sin in our lives.
