David invites nature into his grief over the death of Saul and Jonathan. As an expression of mourning, even the earth is to be barren -- the moisture for crops to be spent in sorrow rather than in nurturing the fields for crops or the beauty of the lily. It is moments like these that give credence to the saying, "A day of sorrow is longer than a month of joy."
