David wanted any captors of Absalom to "deal gently" with him. But the base instincts of David's servants took over: they dealt harshly and killed him.
When a person, group, or nation has been hurt by another, the tendency is to want to get even; destroy the enemy. The urge for vengeance goes against Christ's command to love our enemies.
There was a great deal of bitterness after our nation's most brutal war, the Civil War (which was anything but "civil"). When the South was defeated, many in the North wanted to punish the "rebels" in any way possible.
