Desert Rain
Spring explodes as rain
drums down on desert sands. It hears
again the music of the dance, and spears
through rain-soaked dunes with bursting buds to spill
bouquets on ozone-scented air and fill
dawn fresh with Spring.
Storm clouds race on,
rain melts away, and newborn desert sears
the hearts of people watching Spring with tears
that like the rain would vanish shed on sand.
But human flesh is clay, and clay withstands
rain drumming down
and tears on masks
we wear to hide from life, ashamed of smears
