Doubt was his continual companion...

Doubt was his continual companion. He envied those who seemed so confident, so sure of themselves. They could take risks -- and did. Were they not bothered by the thought of failure? Were they so used to success that failure wasn't even a consideration? Even when he did take a risk, it was never with the expectation of success; it was only because doing nothing presented a worse alternative. He knew this was no way to live his life, but he didn't know how to escape his ingrained patterns of thought and behavior.
