Dr. Jerome Groopman, of the oncology clinic at Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, wrote "The Last Deal" in the September 8, 1997, New Yorker, in which he tells about the last days of a 54-year-old Wall Street gambler, whom he called Kirk Bains. Bains, who came to him as a last resort after doctors at Yale had diagnosed inoperable and untreatable kidney cancer, acknowledged, "I celebrate Christmas. The food; the music; decorating the tree; giving gifts, that's fun. But I'm not a long-term investor. I like quick returns.
