During the summer of 1988, Americans watched news coverage of the raging forest fires in Yellowstone National Park and the heroic efforts of firefighting crews who battled the flames. In spite of the firefighters' hard work, a lot of forest land burned. It was a national disaster. Such destruction was heartbreaking to witness even second hand, through the lense of a television camera. Even when scientists talked about how Yellowstone would eventually recover, it was hard to imagine what it would look like.
