In the early decades of this century, the great Russian dancer Waslaw Nijinski fired imaginations on two continents. Many years after the artist's death, a friend described the transformation Nijinski would undergo before a performance. If he was to take the part of a fawn, the dancer would put on make-up for the role, coloring his skin and clothing his body in flowing garb to suggest this swift creature of the forest. Far more important, though, several hours before the performance he would begin another alteration, deeper than any made in his clothing or the tones of his flesh.
