Edwin Long in his painting titled Anno Domini pictures the arrival of the Holy Family in the land of Egypt as they escape the murderous deeds of King Herod. In the painting one is confronted by the age-old worship of Isis. Mystic characters sculptured in stone line every foot of the temple towers. The crowds prostrate themselves before a stone idol. In desperation the sick reach out for help and a mother holds a dying child in vain. The one who alone can help is passing by, held in His mother's arms, both of whom ride upon a donkey.
