Elisha became the recipient of a "wealthy" woman's kindness. He understood that we all have something we need. She did not feel fulfilled without a son. Although her husband was "old," Elisha told her she would in a year have a son. She could not believe him.
We especially need faith at the time when faith seems futile. Ryan Stallings, the infant son of Patricia and David Stallings, in July, 1989, was taken from their home in Hillsboro, south of St. Louis, to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis. Instead of being helped with her son's illness, a pediatrician stated that there were high levels of ethylene glycol (antifreeze) in Ryan's blood, and Ryan was put in a foster home. On September 4, four days after Patricia had visited Ryan, he was hospitalized a second time and died September 7.
The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney George G. McElroy III, told the jury at Patricia Stalling's trial for the murder of her son that to believe Ryan died of natural causes was absurd. McElroy told the jury, "You might as well speculate that some little man from Mars came down and shot him full of some mysterious bacteria." Patricia was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in March, 1991. However, in February of 1990 she gave birth to David. David suffered from methymalonic acidemia or MMA. Tests showed that Ryan also had MMA, and one of the compounds that had been elevated by Ryan's disease could be confused with ethylene glycol by the supposedly up-to-date equipment. Charges have been dropped and Patricia is able to embrace (also) her son.
