In an English village during the Middle Ages, a tyrannical nobleman was determined to undermine the popularity of a local minister, but was unsuccessful. Finally, he resorted to physical intimidation, and then imprisonment of the minister. In spite of this persecution the minister, even from his dungeon cell, continued to exert his influence through his followers. Finally, the nobleman, seeing his own power diminish, and knowing that execution of the clergyman would make him a martyr, released the minister in an effort to strengthen his supremacy over the village.
